If you move your mode dial to aperture priority and select f/4 as your aperture value, the camera will automatically select the fastest shutter speed that your camera and lens. In sports, this can range from 1/500s to 1/1000s or faster. By default the camera exposes the scene to 18% gray, or middle gray. The most common reason why would use shutter priority mode is to control the appearance of motion in an image.
